Start in Sedona

Follow Oak Creek Canyon
The U.S. Forest Service Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Drive page describes the paved 15-mile stretch of SR 89A between Sedona and Flagstaff, including Midgley Bridge, Slide Rock, and Oak Creek Vista. Leave time for pullouts, shade, and changing light; check current road conditions before driving.
Spend the high-country stop in Flagstaff

Optional eastbound extension
If the route continues toward the Painted Desert, pair the Petrified Forest photo with the National Park Service auto-tour guide. The park road is a separate commitment from the Sedona–Flagstaff drive, so treat it as an extension rather than a rushed add-on.
